A microphone is a device used to capture sound live for either recording, amplification or analysis.

A microphone (colloquially called a mic) is an acoustic-to-electric transducer or sensor that converts sound into an electrical signal.

Most microphones today use electromagnetic induction (dynamic microphone), capacitance change (condenser microphone), piezoelectric generation, or light modulation to produce an electrical voltage signal from mechanical vibration.

For more information on microphones in general, consult the article Microphone from Wikipedia.
