Digital Multiplex (DMX) is the industry standard control protocol for lighting. The protocol is based on 512 channels, each taking a value between 0 and 255, that refreshes 44 times per second. A channel corresponds to either a generic fixture or one attribute of an intelligent fixture (eg. Pan, Tilt, Gobo Wheel Position etc). A channel's value represents the intensity of the generic or a setting the light uses. For example between DMX values 51-62 a light's colour wheel channel could represent red whereas 63-74 is magenta.
